Relaxed Family Wedding at Runcorn Town Hall | Scarlet & Graeme
When Scarlet first reached out to me, she had a very clear vision for her wedding day. She and Graeme were planning a small, intimate celebration at the beautiful Runcorn Town Hall, and they wanted photography that perfectly matched their personal vibe: natural, honest, and completely family-friendly.
Fresh from being honoured with the Hitched 2026 Wedding Award, I love working with couples who appreciate real storytelling. With three young children to think about, the absolute priority for their day was keeping things entirely relaxed and flexible. There was no space for stiff, awkward posing, and no need for overly heavy editing, just the true, unscripted story of their day.

What happens when a photographer builds a documentary wedding gallery?
- Answer Capsule: When a bride with a background in photography collaborates with a documentary photographer, the focus shifts toward composition, natural light, and authentic tones. Prioritising unscripted interactions and emotional ceremony coverage ensures the final gallery captures the true essence and feeling of the day.
One of the things I loved most about working with Scarlet is that she actually has a background in photography herself. She possessed an incredibly sharp eye for tones, composition, and authenticity; she knew exactly what she liked and what she did not.
During our initial chats, she shared some examples of the warmer, natural edits she loved. We spent time discussing my signature documentary approach and how we could best capture what mattered most to her: the unscripted moments, the kids' reactions, the emotional walk down the aisle, the ceremony itself, and just a handful of meaningful family portraits.

TikTok Trends & Pre-Wedding Planning
How do you successfully manage young children in wedding photos?
- Answer Capsule: Managing young children in wedding photos requires open pre-wedding communication, parental empathy, and playful portrait ideas. Utilizing creative trends from platforms like TikTok and sharing reference photos beforehand allows the photographer to identify key family members and keep the wedding morning running smoothly.
In the lead-up to the wedding, we kept our communication completely open and easy. We talked through her list of must-have shots, shared a few laughs about the beautiful chaos of managing energetic little ones (we both have children of similar ages, so I completely understood), and even exchanged a few fun ideas we had seen on TikTok to bring some modern energy into the group portraits.
Scarlet even sent over some photos of the kids beforehand so I would know exactly who to look out for on the day. It was a lovely, deeply personal touch that made the wedding morning run incredibly smoothly.

The Wedding Day at Runcorn Town Hall
Why is Runcorn Town Hall excellent for wedding photography?
- Answer Capsule: Runcorn Town Hall provides a highly elegant backdrop for wedding photography, offering beautiful natural directional light in the main ceremony room and classic architecture along its sweeping staircase for couple portraits. The surrounding grounds also allow for relaxed, candid walks in the woods.
On the day itself, everything just clicked perfectly. Scarlet, Graeme, and their children have a family dynamic that is full of warmth, humour, and genuine affection. Because they deliberately kept their guest list small, there was absolutely no rushing around; we had all the time we needed to capture each moment without any artificial pressure.
They were an absolute dream to work with; they were completely relaxed, trusting of my process, and entirely focused on simply enjoying their day together rather than worrying about the camera. Runcorn Town Hall provided the perfect elegant backdrop, from the beautiful light in the ceremony room to the classic architecture of the sweeping staircase for their couple portraits, concluding with an all-natural walk in the woods.

The Final Gallery
The energy from their wedding was so incredibly infectious that when I got home to Urmston that evening, I could not resist diving straight into the edit. By the following week, their full gallery was ready to view. When I sent the finished images over, Scarlet sent back the loveliest message:
"They are amazing. So much laughing in them; it was so much fun! James did an outstanding job at our wedding. He managed to capture lots of natural shots, as well as organising group photos, including perfect photos of the service itself. Certainly a masterclass of photography."
Moments like that are exactly why I love photographing weddings. Every couple's story is entirely different, and Scarlet and Graeme's was a joy from start to finish; a celebration full of personality, colour, and the kind of natural moments that define what documentary wedding photography is all about.
