As a documentary wedding photographer based right here in Urmston, Flixton House is genuinely one of my favourite local venues. It is a brilliant hidden gem in Greater Manchester—a Grade II listed building that offers classic, historic elegance without ever feeling stuffy or overly formal. If you are planning your wedding here and want a relaxed, unscripted approach to your photography, you are in exactly the right place.
What makes Flixton House so special is the variety it offers in such an intimate space. You have the grand, dark wood panelling inside for the ceremony, contrasting beautifully with the bright, airy conservatory and the lush green gardens outside.
Because I document weddings naturally as they happen, I look for venues where guests feel comfortable enough to just let their hair down and be themselves. Flixton House has a wonderfully relaxed flow to it, meaning your guests aren't constantly being herded from room to room. They can enjoy the drinks reception on the lawn while I capture the real, unposed moments and genuine laughter.

Couples often tell us they chose Flixton House for its “hidden gem” feel — a proper manor house in Greater Manchester with beautiful gardens, but without the formality of a large country estate.

Having photographed celebrations here in all seasons, I know the grounds inside and out. If you book me as your Flixton House wedding photographer, here is how we make the most of the space without taking you away from your party:
The Gardens & The Wrought Iron Gates: While your guests are mingling, we only need to slip away for 10 to 15 minutes. The historic wrought iron gates and the sweeping branches of the mature trees in the gardens provide the perfect backdrop for relaxed, natural couple portraits.
When you choose a venue as characterful as Flixton House, the flow of your day becomes incredibly important. Having photographed countless weddings here as a local Urmston photographer, here are four things I always tell my couples to consider when planning their timeline and layout:
Flixton House gives you brilliant options for your ceremony, but they each photograph very differently. The Wright Room offers a beautiful, intimate atmosphere with its classic period fireplaces and large sash windows. If you are having a larger ceremony in the main Ballroom, the natural light from the conservatory doors is fantastic. If the Manchester weather is kind and you opt for an outdoor ceremony in the gardens, I always recommend checking where the sun will be at your exact ceremony time so you aren't squinting through your vows!
You don't need to block out an hour for portraits. The true beauty of Flixton House is the ornamental "Secret Gardens." Because they are so close to the main house, we can easily nip out twice: once after your ceremony for a quick 10-minute stroll, and once more just as the sun is setting (the 'Golden Hour'). The mature trees and rose beds look entirely different as the evening light drops, giving your final gallery a beautiful, varied look without keeping you from your guests.
Because Flixton House is so easily accessible from Junction 9 of the M60, it’s a dream for guest logistics. However, if you are getting ready locally on the morning of the wedding, factor in the Urmston traffic if your ceremony is on a Friday or a weekday. I always recommend booking your morning prep location (whether it's the venue's own Bridal Suite or a local Airbnb) as close as possible so you can enjoy a relaxed, champagne-filled morning without stressing about the commute.
When the day shifts to the evening party, the Ballroom at Flixton House really comes alive. They recently installed a brand new suspension dance floor, which is a massive focal point. When discussing your evening layout with the venue coordinator, try to position your DJ or band so that your photographer has a clear, sweeping view of the dance floor from the conservatory end of the room. This allows me to capture the chaotic, high-energy dance shots against the beautiful backdrop of the room's high ceilings and period details.
If you have booked Flixton House and want a local Manchester wedding photographer who knows the venue perfectly—and who won't turn your day into a giant photoshoot—I would love to hear from you.
