Urban Romance: A Pre-Wedding Shoot in Castlefield & the New Albert Square

Manchester has a pulse unlike any other city, and as a Manchester wedding photographer, there is nothing quite like capturing a couple’s chemistry against the backdrop of our industrial heritage and Gothic architecture.

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of exploring two of the city’s most iconic locations with a wonderful couple for their pre-wedding session: the timeless canals of Castlefield and the newly reimagined Albert Square.

The Industrial Soul: Castlefield

We started our session in Castlefield, often called the "urban oasis" of Manchester. There’s a reason this is a go-to spot for engagement photography. The contrast between the rugged red brick of the old warehouses and the sleek, iron lines of the Merchant’s Bridge creates a cinematic depth that you just can’t find anywhere else.

James’s Pro Tip: Castlefield is actually one of the few places that looks better on a typical overcast Manchester day. The "flat" light allows the textures of the brickwork and the reflections in the canal to really pop without harsh shadows.

A New Era for Albert Square

From the quiet cobbles of Castlefield, we headed into the heart of the city. It’s been incredible to see Albert Square finally breathe again. With the massive pedestrianisation project now complete, the square is 25% larger and feels like a true European plaza.

Even with the Manchester Town Hall still undergoing its final stages of restoration (we’re all counting down to 2027!), the Victorian Gothic facade remains the ultimate "power backdrop." The new granite paving and the open views toward the Cenotaph provided us with a clean, grand space to capture those wide-angle, "epic" moments.

Why a Pre-Wedding Shoot is a Must

At Cherished Images, I always tell my couples that the pre-wedding shoot isn’t just about the photos—it’s the "rehearsal." It’s our time to get used to each other’s rhythm. By the time the wedding day rolls around, you’ve already mastered the art of being yourself in front of my lens.

"Working with James was so relaxed. We were nervous about being 'posed,' but by the time we hit Albert Square, we’d completely forgotten the camera was there."
