Annie & Mark’s Intimate Summer Wedding at The Old Parsonage Didsbury
An Unhurried, Sun-Drenched Celebration in South Manchester
When Annie and Mark began planning their wedding, they knew exactly what they wanted: an intimate gathering of their closest family and friends, zero performative fuss, their two beloved dogs right at their side, and an atmosphere that felt more like a relaxed summer garden party than a rigid production.
Tucked quietly behind the village green in South Manchester, The Old Parsonage in Didsbury provided the perfect setting. On a warm, luminous July afternoon, their celebration brought together heartfelt personal storytelling, lush garden strolls, and one of the most uniquely competitive evening entertainments we’ve ever had the pleasure of documenting — an official wedding conker championship.
The Venue: The Old Parsonage & Parsonage Gardens, Didsbury
Grade II listed and steeped in local history, The Old Parsonage (often affectionately called Didsbury Parsonage) is one of South Manchester’s true hidden gems. Framed by stone mullioned windows, stained glass features, and enclosed botanical gardens that connect through to Fletcher Moss, it offers an intimate, tranquil feel that feels miles away from the city centre bustle while remaining easily accessible for guests.
For couples looking for an unposed documentary wedding photographer experience, the Parsonage is exceptional. Its deep red gallery walls, natural timber flooring, and generous bay windows create a warm, distinctive light that allows moments to unfold completely uninterrupted.

A Humanist Ceremony with Hannah Wroe Gill
One of the standout highlights of Annie and Mark’s day was their deeply personal ceremony, crafted and led by renowned Manchester humanist celebrant Hannah Wroe Gill (Thistledown Ceremonies).
Rather than following a standardised script, Hannah wove Annie and Mark’s real journey, shared quirks, and shared values into a ceremony that had the entire room moving between belly laughs and happy tears.
And in true family fashion, Annie and Mark’s two dogs made their grand entrance straight down the aisle with bespoke blue leads and bowties, greeting guests before taking their proud positions at the front of the room.

Confetti Under the Ivy Arch & Sunshine in Parsonage Gardens
Following their ring exchange, Annie and Mark stepped through the ivy-draped garden doorway into a flurry of biodegradable confetti.
Annie paired her elegant flutter-sleeve wedding gown with vintage sunglasses, setting a wonderfully chic, laid-back tone for the afternoon. With no formal shot lists or hours spent away from their guests, we took a gentle 10-minute stroll through Parsonage Gardens.
Along the way, the couple stopped by one of Didsbury’s most famous park benches — inscribed with The Smiths’ classic lyric, "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" — creating a timeless, distinctly Manchester portrait.

Feasting, Heartfelt Toasts & The Evening Conker Championship
Back inside the red gallery room, long banquet tables were set for an intimate wedding breakfast. Drinks flowed, laughter bounced off the high ceilings, and glasses were raised in celebration of two people who clearly bring immense happiness to everyone around them.

As the sun began to dip into late afternoon, the real competitive spirit came out onto the lawns. Rather than traditional lawn games, Mark and Annie hosted an official wedding conker championship! Complete with threaded horse chestnuts, intense showdowns, and plenty of heckling from friends with drinks in hand, it was the definition of genuine, unmanufactured wedding fun.
